Basilica of San Pietro (St. Peter) (Cittadel Vaticano) located in Vatican City, Rome , is the main Catholic Basilica of the most magnificent in the world. St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest church ever built (it’s covering an area 23,000 m² and has a capacity of more than 60,000) and one of the holiest sites in Christianity.

This basilica construction started in 1506 and completed in 1626. St. Peter’s Basilica was built by order of the first Christian Emperor Constantine I at 326 years in the St. Peter were martyred. One thousand three-hundred years later the building began to fall slowly, and therefore the Pope Nicholas V ordered the construction of a new basilica. But the new construction began in 1506 to a term of Pope Julius II.

Development basilica takes 120 years, Michelangelo asked to contribute his work with his Pieta. At that time he had 72 years of age. Basilica is the largest basilica in the world with a length of 193 meters and 132 meters high.

Tradition says that this building is the place where St. Peter, one of the apostles of Jesus and considered the first pope, was buried. This church is the burial place of St. Peter beneath the main altar. The other popes were also buried in this basilica.
